$1.3M FEBRUARY 8, 2018 Originally posted on NJSpotlight.com The New Jersey Healthy Communities Network’s Community Grants Program (NJHCN) has awarded $1.3 million to 66 New Jersey nonprofits. The NJHCN is a coalition of six funding organizations that support communities that increase opportunities for healthy eating and active living. The 66 recipients represent a cross-section of nonprofit, school, and government organizations from across the state. Each will receive a grant of $20,000 over a two-year period. Each grant will address at least one strategy to increase opportunities for physical activity and one strategy to improve access to healthy eating. Among the initiatives are school-wellness policies, farmers markets, open streets, healthy corner stores, bike racks, walk/bike/food audits, and community gardens. Plainfield Healthy Community Network to Host Free Tasting Event at Isabelita Market

Chris Christie took a giant step to curb the impact of an insidious disease. They approved a law that requires Medicaid coverage for diabetes self-management education, training, services, and equipment for patients diagnosed with diabetes, gestational diabetes, and pre-diabetes. As an organization that is committed to improving the health and wellness of the nation, and addressing health equity, we understand the importance of preventing and managing chronic disease. Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market to reopen on Monday

Originally posted on mercerspace.com June 7, 2017 The Greenwood Ave. Farmers Market will reopen for its third season on Monday, offering Trenton-area residents healthy food options and health screenings throughout the summer. The market—located at 427 Greenwood Avenue, behind the Trenton Transit Center—will be open every Monday through Oct. 23 from 1 to 6 p.m. with the exception of holidays. The market will feature “Jersey Fresh” fruits and vegetables, tropical fruits, meat, eggs and bakery items. For the first time this year, the market will also offer seafood products, fruit smoothies and ready-to-eat meals from local food trucks. Matching dollars will be provided for residents using SNAP, WIC and SFMNP vouchers. Presented on June 7 during the Department of Health’s annual Population Health Summit at Rider University attended by more than 350 public health professionals, the award acknowledges NJPHK’s leadership and collaboration in improving health through leadership and innovation.  Over the past five years, NJPHK and its community partners have made significant strides in implementing more than 200 environmental and policy changes to increase access to physical activity and healthy eating. Dust off your running shoes, bicycle or skates and join the community for New Brunswick Ciclovia on April 23! New Brunswick Ciclovia is a family-friendly event that emphasizes healthy living and community bonding by making City streets open for all to enjoy. From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., more than three miles of roads throughout New Brunswick will become temporarily car-free for five hours on a three-mile route without a beginning or an end. Participants are free to travel in any way they choose, whether it be walking, running, biking, skateboarding or dancing.
