Holidays are filled with dishes with sugars and fat, which makes eating healthy during a season filled with sweet treats and high calorie meals is no easy task. Don’t feel defeated! The folks at Real Simple.com compiled a list of healthy holiday survival guide to keep you healthy and happy during the holiday season. Here are 12 that really stood out:

  1. Eat breakfast – It helps to prevent over eating throughout the day and is the most important meal of the day! Eating oatmeal or eggs will help you feel fuller longer and curb your appetite.
  2. Before you splurge on an unhealthy dish, do something healthy first – If you know you’re going to eat a heavy holiday meal, go for a brisk walk or plan a time to exercise before you go.
  3. Don’t stress out about dessert – If you over indulge at one meal, just make the next one lighter. Trust us, you won’t gain weight from one piece of cake!
  4. Be sure to get veggies on your plate – Fruits and veggies are perfect appetizer choices to keep you from feeling bloated or sleepy.
  5. Sit with fellow healthy eaters at meal times.
  6. Stand more than an arm’s length away from snacks!
  7. Avoid fast food places who utilize the color red – Red stimulates the appetite more than other colors.
  8. Use smaller plates and serving utensils to eat from.
  9. Bring your own dish to parties – Bringing something healthy will ensure that you can dig into something nutritious.
  10. Keep the communal goodies out of your line of view at the office!
  11. Eat a sugar free mint when you’re finished eating! Fresh palates can curb over eating.
  12. Concentrate on your meal – Research shows that multitasking while eating makes you eat more mindless calories.
