From Corner Store to Vineland Community Hub

September 6, 2019

In what was formerly a true food desert, 25 Vineland corner stores now sell and promote affordable, nutritious food to residents. Live Healthy Vineland introduced the Food Trust’s Healthy Corner Store Initiative in 2011. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation funded the initiative which is helmed by the Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA and the Vineland Health Department in partnership with the American Heart Association. Vineland’s Healthy Corner Stores benefit from consultation with The Food Trust and Live Healthy Vineland. Store owners receive advice on effective ways to display and promote healthy foods, and they can apply to purchase freezers and other equipment when grants become available. Not content to stop with Vineland, Live Healthy Vineland recruited corner stores in the three counties served by the Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA. They also included restaurants and food pantries in the network: 12 local pantries now receive fresh produce from Ploch Farms and the […]

Farm to Pantry links local farms and food dispensaries to get fresh food to the people who live in food deserts where fresh food is not easy to come by. The program was designed by the Vineland Health Department and Cumberland Cape Atlantic YMCA working in collaboration with the Community Food Bank of NJ. Last year from April to November, 35 tons of fresh produce was delivered to Vineland food pantries and soup kitchens allowing residents and their families to enjoy the taste and benefits of healthy eating. Vineland’s Strong Mothers for Strong Families Featured at Upcoming APHA Conference

July 31, 2017

Vineland has one of the highest rates of chronic health diseases in the state.  While preschools have served as a great avenue for health intervention in the community, delivering health promotion information directly to preschool parents has proved challenging. So, the Live Healthy Vineland team decided to take an unconventional approach and leverage pre school family workers as a conduit to families. “The preschool family workers already had direct access to the parents and caregivers on a regular basis and were better able to support their needs,” said Alysia Mastrangelo, PT, Ph.D., and Professor at Stockton University.  “We just needed to equip them with the appropriate health education resources.”  The Strong Mothers for Strong Families (Madres Fuertes para Familias Fuertes) project officially kicked off its new effort during the summer of 2016 with focus groups that included preschool family workers, teachers, school nurses and other staff members. The innovative program provided training for frontline preschool staff on topics such as nutrition, physical activity, tobacco cessation and chronic disease prevention for children, parents, and caregivers. “We knew to be successful we had to expand our support to include more services related to basic needs and chronic disease prevention,” said Betsy Erbaugh, Ph.D., lead researcher for Strong Moms for Strong Families and Assistant Professor at Stockton.     Through the preschool family workers, hundreds […]
